Kennaway House is an independent charitable trust, working for the community in East Devon as a centre for adult learning, arts, crafts, weddings, parties, meeting spaces, and much more. After the regeneration of the House in 2009, local support continues to form the foundations of the charity- our lovely group of local volunteers help to steward exhibitions and events, trace and compile Kennaway history and assist with the upkeep of our charity. Volunteers are the spirit of Kennaway House, providing invaluable time and support to its maintenance and presence in the community. To join our Volunteer scheme, please get in touch by clicking on the button below.

Kennaway House aims to bring the most interesting, varied range of talks, exhibitions, classes, workshops and events to the East Devon community. Our successful 'Meet the Author' series is testament to this goal, with the likes of Vince Cable, Joan Bakewell, Dame Margaret Drabble and Dame Hilary Mantel, among others, coming to Kennaway to speak about their work. This series continues to draw literary figures from all genres, as does the Sidmouth Literary Festival, hosted at Kennaway House in June. The range of classes and workshops held here continues this theme of diversity- everything from French classes to Chinese Brush Painting and Art History- as does the fantastic evening events held here; Murder Mystery nights have proven extremely entertaining!

Since its formation in 2002, the Friends membership scheme has run a multitude of fundraising and social events, which have also helped to raise the profile of Kennaway House. These have included concerts and recitals, wine tastings, film shows (some including archive footage of Sidmouth’s past), fashion shows and jazz nights with a hog roast.

Become part of a thriving charity that gives local people, initiatives and businesses a platform from which to share, celebrate and grow their projects. Our network extends throughout East Devon, and allows its members access to all our upcoming event information, opportunities and local history. As a Friend, you will receive:

  • our regular newsletter giving details of future events
  • priority booking on all our events
  • invitations to events exclusively for Friends and their guests
  • Membership runs from Jan - Dec each year, which is to help make the administration of the Friends database more straightforward - at least we hope it will.
  • The Friends support Kennaway House by raising funds to help sustain its future viability. We aim to do this in a social and enjoyable way and try to offer something to appeal to all tastes and ages.

In the excellent facilities offered by the restored House, we plan to extend our activities and add informal evenings in the Cellar Bar and events to reflect the Regency heritage of the House. Some are exclusively for members of the Friends and their guests.
